Ah the oversexed nun, a true staple in the exploitation genre.  The Sinful Nuns of St. Valentine was released on blu-ray this week, a release that has sadly been overshadowed by the Cold Eyes of Fear.  This is too bad really, while The Sinful Nuns might not be as well known, it's still a good sleazy romp in it's own right.  The film is about Esteban, a man on the lamb after being wrongfully accused of murdering a Bishop.  He takes a bit of a beating before escaping to a nearby convent.  The convent is also the refuge of Lucita, a woman torn between her love of Esteban and her pact with the convent.  Together they devise a plan to flee together, but those plans are thwarted when Lucita is wrongfully accused of the murder of her lesbian-nun roommate.

As the movie progresses we learn of Lucita's deceitful parents, the Abbess' not-so-Godly ways, there's torture, wenches, forced lesbianism, and nudity.  One of my favorite characters in the film is that of Father Onorio (Corrado Gaipa) a guy who definitely takes pleasure in the torture of young nude women.  There's a scene where he almost gleefully tells Lucita of his plans to have her burned alive, it's great!  Esteban finally learns of Lucita's fate and will now stop at nothing to insure her rescue.  The film takes a few ques from more notable exploitation movies of the past and throws in an (almost painfully) obvious "star-crossed-lovers" angle, with that said I did dig it.

Redemption/Kino Lorber did a decent job in restoring the film.  Given it's age and the fact that there probably weren't very many prints to work with, it does look good.  While it suffers from some flickers, lines, and spots here in there, chances are if you are watching a film of this nature you know what to expect.  The PQ does look natural and devoid of any real tampering.  The AQ is more of the same, the audio presented is in Italian and the film does have optional English subtitles.  As far as extras goes there's only a trailer reel featuring the following: Virgin Witch, Black Magic Rites, House of Whipcord, Justine, and Killer's Moon.  So this release is a bit sparse in the extras department, I wish they could have included an interview or two.  I will say that I think the artwork used on this release is worlds better than the past releases of The Sinful Nuns.

It might not be the sleaziest of the nunsploitation films, but it's certainly earned itself a place in my film library.
