Mezco's Dracula/Mummy & Boris/Claude Monster Mez-itz

Who can say no to jacked up monsterized versions of Lego mini figures?  Not me, that's for sure.  I'm not positive if that was Mezco's original intent, but these certainly remind me of the little lego figurines I had when I was a child albeit more detailed and a lot cooler.

Mezco began releasing Mez-itz in the early 2000's with lines inspired by Alien, Hellboy, Pirates, and classic monsters.  The Monster Mez-itz line consisted of two series which were both released in 2003.  Each series was made up of four figures with the first wave containing Dracula/Mummy & Frankenstein/Wolfman, and the second with Boris Creepola/Claude Clearwaters & Dr. Mezitstein/Grim Grimly.

The design for each set is pretty similar with the color and characters differing per series.  Each small figure is prominently displayed in the bubble and I cannot imagine MOC horror enthusiasts not digging the overall design and layout.

The 3 inch figures are each loaded with detail while still managing to have a simplistic look due to the sharing of a basic mold.  While each figure's body is the same things are kept interesting with the addition of items such as bandages, overcoats, and other small accessories.

The first series is made up of the real archetypal monsters.  While everyone is very familiar with the likes of Dracula and The Mummy, this is Mezco's take on them and the company did a grand job breathing new life into the classic characters.  Dracula's head sculpt is very rat like, reminiscent of Murnau's Nosferatu.  The Mummy's sculpt sort of reminds me of one of those shrunken-head apples that Vincent Price was pawning off on kids back in the 70's.  I dig it.

The second series is where the company really went a bit crazy, the only real familiar character is in the form of an invisible man named Claude Clearwaters (see what they did there?)  While it's familiar territory the company worked it over a bit giving the character a long coat and facial bandages with the option of removing them to reveal a clear body.  Boris Creepola is an undead butler with a really bad cleft palate, while it isn't the most complex figure of the line I think it might be my favorite.

With the exception of a pair clear arms included with Claude this line boasts zero accessories.

This line really had a lot of potential.  The second wave really improved on things and it's a pity these guys didn't garner enough success for a third series.  Before this series was canceled Mezco displayed a full on castle playset and it's a real bummer the set never made it to the production stage.  This series can still be found pretty cheap with the second wave being a bit more scarce.  I would highly recommend these to monster fans as they're a lot of fun and look very nice on a shelf!
