DST - Universal Monsters Select Series 4 - The Hunchback of Notre Dame

It's almost October and you know what that means, Diamond Select Toys will soon be unleashing a new series of Universal Monsters into unsuspecting stores nationwide.  This series sees the release of two famous characters portrayed by two of the most notorious actors to ever grace the silver screen, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Lon Chaney Sr.) and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Boris Karloff; Abbott and Costello Meet...)

While I do not have Dr. Jekyll in front of me, I do have Quasimodo, and if Jekyll is of half the quality of 'Modo than it's safe to say that we're in for a  real treat!

Normal Diamond Select deluxe packaging, huge with the figure in full view.  I'm in no way a MOC collector, but with packaging like this it's very tempting.

There have been so many great improvements made with line over the last few series.  The sculpting has always been strong within the line, but the addition of the articulation has really made these that much better.  It seems like the paint and detail also made a big improvement over the years.

The sculpt is definitely spot on.  The figure has a number of washes on his face bringing out the wrinkles and deformities.  The paint is strong with this release, a lot of bold colors with dark washes to bring out the smallest of details.

The figure has 18 points of articulation, of which the legs are hindered due to the Hunchback's coat.  Even with that issue, there's enough articulation to get out a number of poses.  I'm positive fans of Chaney's fans will be more than pleased with this 8 inch incarnation.

Quasimodo is packed with a nice, solid plastic Gargoyle that he can perch on.  At almost 4 inches it's not quite the size of the Phantom's piano, but it does have a bit of weight to it and the figure looks great standing atop the statue.  Also included are a small crown and scepter.

While Chaney's portrayal of The Hunchback is a classic, when one thinks "Universal Monsters" the character is probably not the first that comes to mind.  While there are other icons we're still yearning for I'm confident fans will be pleased with this figure.  The paint, sculpt, and detail are top notch, some of the best work I've seen out of the line thus far.

I urge everyone to give the company your support so this great can continue!  Click here to purchase a set!

  1. Awesome pics! But I really wanna see a Jekyll/Hyde review. That figure is the belle of the ball in this series from what I hear. So when you get Jekyll in front of ya---review away. Great Quasimodo review.
